Listening to your child when they come to you is the best way to establish trust between the two of you. When they are small, your child will want to tell you everything that went on in school. Everything from the bus ride to school, to the day’s events, to the bus ride home. They cannot wait to tell you what they found funny, what their teacher did, and what their friends did. You should listen sometimes instead of commenting or wait until after they are finished before asking more questions. Giving a child the chance to speak will help them to trust their own voice. As your child grows, they will report the day’s events back to you less and less. They may ask you questions or tell you about one or two things that happened during the day. You should still listen and give advice after they are done speaking. Even when your child does not want to talk to you at all anymore, you will still have to listen. You should also start asking questions and showing an interest in what they are doing. Even though they will not show appreciation, they will fell better knowing that you care about them. Talking
