OTHER AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS In addition to grants and student loans are monetary awards and scholarships. These are offered by civic organizations, colleges, private citizens, corporations, and other groups that want to help people pay for their college education. Scholarships do not have to be paid back and in many cases are awarded in small amounts throughout a student’s college years. There are hundreds of scholarships that are offered for many, many reasons. There are books you can find at the library that will have detailed information about the qualifications and requirements needed to apply. Scholarships can be for anything. There are scholarships for academics, sports, music, hobbies, gender, race, and nationality. These scholarships are set up to help students in the community. Awards that are based on academic or other types of merit are also available. Similar to scholarships, these awards are usually a one time gift.
