Soldiers block a street near the presidential residency in Tegucigalpa, Monday, June 29, 2009. Travelers planning summer vacations in Honduras for scuba diving, surfing or visiting Mayan ruins are strongly encouraged to change their plans. Due to Sunday’s military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya and sent him into exile, the United States Department of State issued a travel alert to American citizens on June 29, 2009 warning against unnecessary travel to Honduras. This Travel Alert expires on July 29, 2009. Many adventure travel hotspots in Honduras are isolated locations far from the unrest and demonstrations in the big cities of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. However, many travelers visiting the Mayan ruins at Copan or scuba diving at Roatan Island enter and leave the country through the big city airports, which could leave them susceptible to potential violence. read more

This is why when beginning adventure travel one should consider a guided trip or a trip with someone experienced for their first couple of excursions. I choose an eight mile hike the next day, which I thought would be easy, but I failed to check the contour map to check elevation change. My eight mile hike consisted of three miles straight up to the Appalachian Trail , then one mile straight down, and then four miles straight up to another ridge. Usually when hiking you can out walk the mosquitoes, but these mosquitoes were large and fierce and were able to keep up with my walk (and I was sprint walking) and attacked and bit me relentlessly. read more

The scenic drive tours in Kettle Moraine are a great way to explore the two state forests. For instance, you can drive down this road and park at a trail head and hike the 649 mile Ice Age Scenic Trail . Along the scenic drive in the northern unit there is an Ice Age visitor center that brings this information to life. For instance, at Butler Lake in the northern unit off the scenic drive lies the Parnell Esker. This summer take a scenic drive through one of the Kettle Moraine State Forests and choose your own adventure. read more

Am I the Chicago adventure travel examiner or the Chicago adventure twitter examiner? I went orienteering in Willow Springs with the Chicago Area Orienteering Club , I went canoeing in Wisconsin , drove around and hiked Wyalusing state park , and I even got out of the house and went over to REI and interviewed Smitty for his bike trip . Enough about twitter, I am going to pack for a day or two of driving around the Chicago area looking for outdoor adventure. Chicago adventure travel examiner or Chicago adventure twitterer? read more

While you sit in your cubicle shuffling papers, or fume in rush hour traffic as the wasted minutes tick past, you know there is a paradise out there where you could live a happy, stress free existence – even if it's only for a few days – or a week – maybe two weeks. Founded in early 2007 by two old friends with a penchant for entrepreneurialism, Moto Caribe is based on the historically significant tropical paradise known as Hispaniola . Moto Caribe provides tours across the island that run the gamut from those stellar beaches, through dense tropical forests, to a wide open desert environment. If a rider is unlucky enough to suffer a breakdown (a potential ride killer that has not happened to date), or even if a rider finds themselves to be the unfortunate victim of a flat tire, the Moto Caribe crew can have a new mount rolled out in minutes. Riding along with the Moto Caribe crew, 160 miles is a good total for a full day of riding. When the February wind is blowing cold through Minnesota, or a wet, slushy pile of snow sits in an ugly pile at the end of a Massachusetts driveway, that 160 miles of riding in sunshine with a warm tropical breeze singing through the trees sounds pretty darned attractive. read more
